Dump Your Duds

If you want to get where you want to go, you have to Dump Your Duds. Your duds are clients, people and friends that are going to hinder your success or keep you from moving forward. They might be close friends, family members or even your old fraternity or sorority members. It’s anyone that does not encourage you to become more. This was something I have had to learn the hard way. I held on to for a long time to my duds thinking they were my friends. Truth be told they really weren’t. They were encouraging me not to do something worthwhile and it took me along time to realize it.

In my opinion, a true friend wants to see you succeed. They encourage you to become great. They want to see you become more. It took me a while to see that my duds didn’t want this for me. They didn’t want to see me succeed. They wanted me to stay the same or worse, fail (some even attempted to sabotage my results). Hugh Macleod puts it this way, “Great ideas alter the power balance in relationships. That’s why great ideas are initially resisted.” You will become like the people you spend the most time with. Do you want what they have? If you don’t, then you need to surround yourself with people that have what you want. Do your friends encourage you to be the best you can be? Or give you permission to stay the same? I don’t spend time with those people anymore. I surround myself with folks that want to see me become great. They encourage me to become more than I am. And I do the same for them. It has made a huge difference in my life and my results. Do this: Write down everyone you spend the most time with. Are they positive towards your goals, or negative? It’s time to dump your duds.

There are two types of people, anchors and motors. You want to lose the anchors and get with the motors because the motors are going somewhere and are having more fun. The anchors just pull you down. – Wyland

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. – Jim Rohn

You Are The Best There Is

intimidationI will never forget the day I started my first business, Urge Marketing. I was working as a server for a restaurant while finishing college. While my guests were happy and during my breaks, I would read business and success books. One day my boss, Dale came up to me and picked up the book I was reading (Inc and Grow Rich… great book about incorporation by the way), and said “Whose book is this?” I told him it was mine. He laughed at me and said, “You’ll never be a business owner, you are a nothing but a server, you idiot. What makes you think that you can run a business?” Due to this and a few other factors, I never went back there to work. That night with nothing but a whopping $100 in my pocket and a dream I started Urge Marketing and have been doing it ever since.

In your path to success, you must realize that you are just as good, worthy and valuable as anyone else. Never let anyone intimidate you into not going further with your goals. Not the Dales or even the biggest successes out there. No matter what kind of car they drive, what their business card says, how much money they make or how big their house is. No one is better than you. You are the best there is.

You have all the ammunition you need to create something massive right inside that head of yours. You have the potential to do, be, or have anything you desire. No one has more than that. Some may have progressed farther down the path at this moment, but that doesn’t make them any better than you. If you start to take action right now, you will be working your way down that same path to greatness. No matter what anyone says, or does, no
matter what your situation is -personal, financial, social or otherwise- you can create your life in your own way. And there is no greater success than that. But you must be the one to achieve your success. Though no one can hold you back if you’re determined enough, but by the same token no one can do it for you. If you want to build your house of success, you’ll have to pick up the hammer and start swinging. You’ve got to step up to the challenge, believe in yourself, and do what it takes. Right now is a great time to start. You deserve the best that life has to offer. Do whatever needs to be done to make it happen.

I think there is a desire inside all of us to be accepted. We try to look, talk and think like everyone else. What happens? We become like everyone else. We hide who we are inside, in order to fit in with the herd. We lose what makes us great. Our personality, ambitions and style. We give up our originality so that we can become a carbon copy of what “we are supposed to be” in everyone else’s eyes. Frankly, we do this because we fear others will think we’re nuts. We worry that others will call us crazy.

Me, I refuse to be like everyone else. So go ahead and call me crazy.

In my opinion, if you are afraid of what others will think than you are the crazy one. No one that ever accomplished anything great or worth mentioning, cared what others would think of them. They didn’t wait for society to approve of their cause. They went against the grain. They stood up when no one else would. They risked looking foolish in order to follow their passion. If you look at what society wants you to be, you will never get very far. You have to step outside the box and follow your heart.

Why lose what makes you special? Why give up the things that make you great?

I can tell you why people don’t accomplish great things. It’s because they fear what others will think. That fear rules them and won’t allow them to step up and follow their heart. Too many people look just alike. Societies goal is to make us less crazy and conform us into their little ball. It doesn’t like it when you go outside the lines.

When I look back at my life, those crazy moments when I stood up for what I believed were the great ones. I don’t regret them even If I failed at what I was trying to accomplish.

If you are out there being called crazy, you just might be on the right track.

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.

I’d rather be disliked for who I am than liked for I am not. – Mark Batterson.

I love this video. (If you can’t see the video above, click here.) This guy is obviously out of his mind drunk or stoned, but he teaches us a valuable lesson: BE UNSTOPPABLE. If you listen closely, you can hear people making fun him. They think he is crazy. They make fun of his dancing. They laugh at him. He didn’t pay any attention to them. He kept going, did his own thing and in the process started a movement that was able to influence a wave of people to join him.

Are you unstoppable in your ventures? People will think your ideas are crap. They will make fun of you. They will point and laugh. Why be worried about what others think? What do they really know anyway? Will their advice or opinions get you anywhere? Make you any money or get you closer to your goals? Or do they simply hold you back? So why care? Don’t be afraid to go after what you really want. Believe in yourself and your ideas and become unstoppable.

Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Don't allow your doubts and fears to imprison you.

If you wish to achieve something great with your goals you must erase doubt completely from your mind. As long as doubt stands in front of your ambition, you will not be able to advance further. You must have an unwavering belief in yourself and your ability to succeed. No one can get where they want to go, while inside they believe they can’t get there. It is next to impossible. The philosophy of “I can’t” or “what will others think” will imprison your ability to move forward.

Confidence in your ability and strength can propel you forward to great heights. If you are always talking about business being bad or how there are no opportunities out there for you, then you will be barred from achievement. It will be a fatal condition that will leave you lifeless. Do not allow yourself to think of possible failures for things which you haven’t pursued yet. Turn your back on those thoughts that put up walls in front of you.

Optimism is a success builder; pessimism an achievement killer. Optimisim is the great producer. It is hope, life. Pessimism is the great destroyer. It is despair, death.

As long as your thoughts radiate doubt, you will never advance towards your goals. You must block those thoughts and doubts from your mind. What help are they anyway? Do our doubts and fears do anything for us except lead to endless worry? You must remain confident in your ability to move forward. Show it in what you think and feel. Erase every trace of it from your life. Make up your mind that you will not allow you doubts and fears to hold you back any longer. Imagine how much relief you will feel when your don’t have anything holding you back. Imagine what heights you can reach when your fears no longer keep you imprisoned.

If you had nothing holding you back, what would you do?

You Stick Out Like A Big Fat Thumb

I have noticed something very common among my entrepreneur friends: we often feel like the odd man out (Or odd women out, for my lady readers).

I have found that entrepreneurs often have a hard time hanging with their old friends and they feel like they are out of place. We are different. We see the world through a completely different set of lenses than most people. We have different experiences, problems and struggles. We are constantly thinking about different things on top of what others think about. We don’t get to leave it behind or come back next Monday like most people. The books we read and television we watch, to the daily activities we partake in and our lifestyles have all completely changed so dramatically that common ground has been lost. You can’t talk about the things that are the most important to you such as your daily struggles with customers, your victories and experiences. It’s not that you feel superior to your old friends or anything, or that what your friends have to say isn’t valid, it’s just that you have become this new person inside. It’s hard to connect with them in this huge aspect of your life. Your lives are completely different now. This often leads to feelings of becoming the odd man out in your old circles. You have this massive side of you that you feel you can’t share with anyone you care about because they don’t understand or can’t relate to you.

I remember trying to talk about business life with my friends and family. They would just blank stare at me like I was from another planet. They were very important to me, but I felt this huge sense of isolation among them. Their lives were so completely different from my own, it was like being in a crowded room and still feeling lonely.

We entrepreneurs are the odd men out. We are different and are no longer normal to our old friends. It’s like we are from a new world. The problem there is that we have lost our common ground. Our connection has changed because of this new side of us. I have found the secret that will help us manage this: Surround yourself with like minded business owners and professionals that want you to succeed and encourage them to do so as well. Meet with them frequently. If you do this you will gain a new network of individuals that you can celebrate success with and face similar challenges together. You will also gain a vault of experienced information that you can build and profit from. You will be amazed at the differences in your conversations and how fulfilling it can be to talk with someone who is in the same boat as you are. You need that time to share your victories, experiences, trials. Please do not get me wrong here, I’m not saying that you should abandon your family or your friends at all. They are still your family and friends, only you have changed. You need this new network of like minded people to connect with your business side of life that your friends and family cannot fill.

Build a network of folks who are just like you. This way you can bridge this inner gap inside yourself and share your business side with people of like mind. You will be amazed at how refreshing it is.

They Will Fear Our Genius.

Look at the great innovations, revolutionary ideas or talent from our history and you will find one commonality: they were all discouraged or ridiculed in some form or another before they became a success. Not one had the red carpet rolled out for them with a parade of fans encouraging them to go on. They all faced opposition and were often attacked. (Ask any entrepreneur, they all have their “you’ll never be able to” story.) Why do people do this? Fear. Fear of uncertainty. Fear of change. Fear of the unknown. Fear of a shift in power or relationships.

Get used to it. People will fear our genius. Those who are our world’s creators, that bring forth new ideas and push the envelope with their talents or ideas need to realize that society fears them. Why? In my opinion, because they were too weak or mediocre to pursue their own talents. So they attack others in this messed up sense of justification to make them feel better about themselves.

The sad truth is that many walk away from ideas or talents simply because others have discouraged it. They are not strong enough in their own convictions to see the fear behind the discouragement. They can’t see the underlying envy and jealousy. Why would you walk away because of a silly reason like a little discouragement? If you succeed, that changes things with those around you. They either can change with it or stay the same. The balance of power changes, then in order to justify it in their own minds that they are ok where they are, they attack others. Whether they admit it or not, they downplay other’s talent because of their own selfish reasons.

Don’t sacrifice your talents and dreams simply because someone (who was mediocre in their own pursuits) disagreed with you or discouraged your passion. Do you think our history’s greats were worried about opinions of mediocre minds or efforts? No they were too concerned with what did matter: their creations on their path to greatness. Are you afraid of looking like a fool? What will really make you look foolish is if you become one of the attackers and start justifying yourself for where you are.

If we all waited around to get approval from people in life, nothing would ever get done. Unknown
